North Dakota native Tom Brosseau learned acoustic guitar from his grandmother and has had a guitar in hand ever since, travelling across the USA, to Iceland to Brighton UK to Barcelona. Portland Oregon-based Shelley Short and Tom Brosseau’s voices and styles fit so easily and naturally that the two often collaborate and do so with a 2018 west coast tour.
Both released haunting beautiful folk albums in 2017. Brosseau’s album, Treasures Untold is a collection, 10 songs – 6 from the Great American Folksong Book and 4 originals – recorded live at a private event in Cologne, Germany. The liner notes are by Daniel J. Levitin, a musician and author, of among other works, This Is Your Brain On Music.
Shelley Short and producer/ musician Peter Broderick recorded Shelley’s album, Pacific City, on the Oregon coast, where Broderick’s house and studio sits on the lee side of great sand dunes that slope down to meet the turbulent Pacific Ocean.
Brosseau has been featured on NPR’s All Songs Considered, Weekend Edition & First Listen, Cerys Matthews’ BBC6 show; his songs included in Judd Apatow’s Netflix series Love, and in the Showtime series, Shameless. Sean Watkins (Nickel Creek, Watkins Family Hour) and John Parish (PJ Harvey) produced Brosseau’s 2014-2016 albums, a trilogy.
“No artist possesses the same peculiar qualities as Brosseau…. The power of his performing persona is so strong that he can pervade the whole room with his subjective existence, making time-warped acolytes out of his audience.” – BBC.com
“Like all great folk purists, Shelley Short has a knack for finding beauty, pain, and pleasure in the darker corners of the world….her new album Pacific City flirts with the sweet and the sour, the light and the shade, and the ominous shadows lurking in between over a beautifully haunting collection of folk-saturated tunes.” – Paste.com
